The 'Bottoms Up'
Missing in Action, March 16, 1945
Bottoms Up was lost on her 105th mission. The target on March 16, 1945 was Wiener-Neustadt marshalling yards. The Bottoms Up was assigned to the 721st Squadron, 450th Bomb Group Heavy, based in Mandura, Italy.
This aircraft was the last of the original air echelon that left Alamorgordo, New Mexico in the winter of 1943. Many in the 450th believed that she would survive the war. She was grounded and reconditioned after her 100th mission by the 721 squadron. The aircraft had over 1060 operational hours.
On the morning of March 16, 1945, the Bottoms Up climbed high in the sky over the Adriatic Sea, last seen entering a cloud formation and never emerging, passing into history.
My attempt to tell it's story lies within these pages...
